February 4th, 2019 - February 14th, 2019 Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on  assignments in English Language Arts! We apologize for the delay in information. January was a great month full of learning about figurative language and narrative writing. The students are finally back into the swing of things and doing really well at the start of second semester! Updates apply for all class periods:  This week, the students are continuing to work with figurative language. We have discussed similes, hyperboles, alliteration, metaphors, personification, oxymorons, and onomatopoeia (acronym: SHAMPOO!) It is important for the students to be able to identify figurative language as it is used in literature, as well as in real life (songs, advertisements, etc.). We are also having the students revise their own written work to include more descriptive language, sensory language, dialogue, and figurative language.  Friday, February 8th , the students have a selection s

December 10th, 2018 - December 20th, 2018 Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on the final assignments in English Language Arts for first semester. Updates apply for all class periods:  This week, the students will be taking the county-mandated Write Score Assessment. This could potentially last until Thursday, 12/13.  On  Friday, December 14th, we will have the Unit Two Benchmark test. Last week, we held review stations with the students, and gave them a study guide as well. Once Write Score is over, we will play review games, such as a team buzzer game and Quizizz. Students can also access the Quizizz at home, so please encourage your students to play the review game multiple times at home!  The code is listed below:  Unit 2 Benchmark Quizizz Code-  914049 Next week, the students will be finalizing their expository essays, and turn them in for a test grade. We gave the students multiple days in class last week to work on their rough drafts, so i

November 26th, 2018 - December 7th, 2018 Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on upcoming assignments in English Language Arts. We apologize that we have not emailed you in a few weeks, but we hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Break. We only have about three and a half weeks left of fall semester, so we will be kicking it into gear as we come to a close.  Updates apply for all class periods:  The students have been working with the stories "The Old Woman Who Lived with Wolves" or "Zlateh the Goat" for a few weeks. The students have written constructed responses, practiced using the plot diagram, completed vocabulary graphic organizers, written summaries, completed Venn Diagrams, and more. Therefore, they are very acclimated with these stories. We will have a quiz over these stories tomorrow, November 27th. The students will practice today using Quizizz, which will greatly prepare them.  We would recommend that the students also play th

October 22nd, 2018 - November 2nd, 2018 Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on upcoming assignments in English Language Arts. We apologize that we have not emailed you in a few weeks. Between Fall Break and students going on field trips different days, our schedules had to be very flexible. We thank you for your patience and understanding.  Ms. Culberson and Ms. Johnson (1st, 2nd, and 5th periods): We have introduced the Unit Two vocabulary words. The students have also read, "The Tail" or "Dragon Dragon" in class and have written constructed responses based on their particular stories. As we continue the week, we will be holding individual writing conferences with the students based on these constructed responses to help them improve their writing skills. We will continue to work with these stories for the remainder of the week. The students will participate in activities on Nearpod, Quizizz, and more, to help further interact with "The

September 24th, 2018 - October 5th, 2018 Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on upcoming assignments in English Language Arts.  Ms. Culberson and Ms. Johnson (1st, 2nd, and 5th periods): We are spending the entire week reviewing for the unit one test. This test will require the students to use the knowledge and skills that they have gained so far, and apply them independently. For example, we have read and studied a variety of short stories throughout the unit. During this process, we have discussed how to make predictions, cite evidence, answer comprehension questions, etc. The students will be expected to do the same on the unit test using a cold read. There will also be questions about the elements of plot and conventions of standard English grammar. Therefore, we have provided the students with a study guide packet to help them study and practice these skills. As the week continues, we will be working through and discussing the different components of the pa

September 10th, 2018 - September 21st, 2018 Good morning, parents! We hope you had a wonderful weekend. Here are some updates on upcoming assignments in English Language Arts.  Ms. Culberson and Ms. Johnson (1st, 2nd, and 5th periods): On Monday, we focused on the plot diagram. We felt like this needed to be reiterated based on their overall performance on the recent selection tests. Beginning today, the students are reading one of two stories. Some students are reading "The Market Square Dog" and some are reading "The Drive-In Movies". We will be working with these short stories for the next two weeks. We will be writing constructed responses, filling out the plot diagram, making "news reports" based on the plot of the stories, practicing citing textual evidence, and playing Quizizz. All of these different strategies will help the students get a greater understanding of the text.  We plan on having a "citing textual evidence"
