9/24/18 - 10/5/18

September 24th, 2018 - October 5th, 2018

Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on upcoming assignments in English Language Arts.

Ms. Culberson and Ms. Johnson (1st, 2nd, and 5th periods):
We are spending the entire week reviewing for the unit one test. This test will require the students to use the knowledge and skills that they have gained so far, and apply them independently. For example, we have read and studied a variety of short stories throughout the unit. During this process, we have discussed how to make predictions, cite evidence, answer comprehension questions, etc. The students will be expected to do the same on the unit test using a cold read. There will also be questions about the elements of plot and conventions of standard English grammar. Therefore, we have provided the students with a study guide packet to help them study and practice these skills. As the week continues, we will be working through and discussing the different components of the packet. We will also play review games, such as Quizizz and Eggspert.

We plan to have the unit test on Tuesday, October 2nd. Please encourage your students to study throughout the week and over the weekend. Towards the end of the week, we will be sending out Quizizz codes to help your students practice more. This test may take two days to complete.

Reminder: The students do not have school Friday, October 5th or Monday, October 8th because it is Fall Break. We will begin a new unit when they return on Tuesday, October 9th. Enjoy your break! :)

February 4th, 2019 - February 14th, 2019 Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on  assignments in English Language Arts! We apologize for the delay in information. January was a great month full of learning about figurative language and narrative writing. The students are finally back into the swing of things and doing really well at the start of second semester! Updates apply for all class periods:  This week, the students are continuing to work with figurative language. We have discussed similes, hyperboles, alliteration, metaphors, personification, oxymorons, and onomatopoeia (acronym: SHAMPOO!) It is important for the students to be able to identify figurative language as it is used in literature, as well as in real life (songs, advertisements, etc.). We are also having the students revise their own written work to include more descriptive language, sensory language, dialogue, and figurative language.  Friday, February 8th , the students have a selection s
