Dear Parents and Guardians,

I wanted to start updating you more frequently on what is going on in our classroom. You can return to this blog to see what your students are accomplishing in my 6th grade English Language Arts classes.

What are we doing now?

The students just completed their unit common assessment on Thursday, November 2nd. Today, we began our "Writer's Workshop Weeks" that we will continue until Thanksgiving break. During this time, the students will be focusing on how to become better writers using correct conventions. As a result, we will be reviewing capitalization, punctuation, transition words, verb tense, subject and verb agreement, and components of well-written paragraph. The students will complete various activities such as editing tasks, Quizizz competitions, group rotations, and writing tasks to assess their improvement throughout our workshop days.

Starting next week, the "Writer's Workshop" will solely focus on building an argumentative essay. The students have been writing argumentative paragraphs in preparation and have also already learned argumentative vocabulary. This task will take them step by step through the argumentative writing process and help them to build an essay suitable for the Georgia Milestones. They will learn how to write appropriate introductions, body paragraphs, cite relevant evidence, and a conclusion. My goal is for their essay to be completed and turned in by Thursday, November 16th.

What to expect:

Please be aware that I have given the students a Book Talk assignment due in a few weeks (Friday after Thanksgiving break). The task is for the students to read a book of their choice and then fill out the "Book Talk Pre-Write" sheet provided to them. They will then present the book to the class using this sheet for a quiz grade. I am doing this assignment in order to encourage students to read outside of class and reflect on what they have read.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at culbersoncj@fultonschools.org.

Have a wonderful Monday!

Sincerely,
Ms. Cassidy Culberson

Updates apply for all class periods:  This week, the students will be taking the county-mandated Write Score Assessment. This could potentially last until Thursday, 12/13.  On  Friday, December 14th, we will have the Unit Two Benchmark test. Last week, we held review stations with the students, and gave them a study guide as well. Once Write Score is over, we will play review games, such as a team buzzer game and Quizizz. Students can also access the Quizizz at home, so please encourage your students to play the review game multiple times at home!  The code is listed below:  Unit 2 Benchmark Quizizz Code-  914049 Next week, the students will be finalizing their expository essays, and turn them in for a test grade. We gave the students multiple days in class last week to work on their rough drafts, so i

February 4th, 2019 - February 14th, 2019 Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on  assignments in English Language Arts! We apologize for the delay in information. January was a great month full of learning about figurative language and narrative writing. The students are finally back into the swing of things and doing really well at the start of second semester! Updates apply for all class periods:  This week, the students are continuing to work with figurative language. We have discussed similes, hyperboles, alliteration, metaphors, personification, oxymorons, and onomatopoeia (acronym: SHAMPOO!) It is important for the students to be able to identify figurative language as it is used in literature, as well as in real life (songs, advertisements, etc.). We are also having the students revise their own written work to include more descriptive language, sensory language, dialogue, and figurative language.  Friday, February 8th , the students have a selection s
