10/22/18 - 11/2/18

October 22nd, 2018 - November 2nd, 2018

Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on upcoming assignments in English Language Arts. We apologize that we have not emailed you in a few weeks. Between Fall Break and students going on field trips different days, our schedules had to be very flexible. We thank you for your patience and understanding.

Ms. Culberson and Ms. Johnson (1st, 2nd, and 5th periods):
We have introduced the Unit Two vocabulary words. The students have also read, "The Tail" or "Dragon Dragon" in class and have written constructed responses based on their particular stories. As we continue the week, we will be holding individual writing conferences with the students based on these constructed responses to help them improve their writing skills. We will continue to work with these stories for the remainder of the week. The students will participate in activities on Nearpod, Quizizz, and more, to help further interact with "The Tail" and "Dragon Dragon". We are planning to have a quiz over these stories on Friday, October 26th.

Next week, we will begin working on argumentative (persuasive) writing. We plan to hold a debate to introduce the idea of writing arguments. We will then have daily mini-lessons to teach the students how to write each section (introduction, body, conclusion) of an argumentative essay and assist them in doing so.

Ms. Culberson (4th period):
We will spend the week finishing up the story, "The Tail" and interacting with the story using Quizizz, rotating between practice stations, and writing constructed responses. The students will also learn and practice the Unit Two vocabulary words. I plan for the students to have a quiz over "The Tail" on either Thursday, October 25th, or Friday, October 26th, depending on when I think they are ready. They will know by Tuesday afternoon when the assessment will be.

Next week, we will begin working on argumentative (persuasive) writing. We will have daily mini-lessons to teach the students how to write each section (introduction, body, conclusion) of an argumentative essay and I will assist them in doing so.

February 4th, 2019 - February 14th, 2019 Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on  assignments in English Language Arts! We apologize for the delay in information. January was a great month full of learning about figurative language and narrative writing. The students are finally back into the swing of things and doing really well at the start of second semester! Updates apply for all class periods:  This week, the students are continuing to work with figurative language. We have discussed similes, hyperboles, alliteration, metaphors, personification, oxymorons, and onomatopoeia (acronym: SHAMPOO!) It is important for the students to be able to identify figurative language as it is used in literature, as well as in real life (songs, advertisements, etc.). We are also having the students revise their own written work to include more descriptive language, sensory language, dialogue, and figurative language.  Friday, February 8th , the students have a selection s

Students can also access the Quizizz at home, so please encourage your students to play the review game multiple times at home!  The code is listed below:  Unit 2 Benchmark Quizizz Code-  914049 Next week, the students will be finalizing their expository essays, and turn them in for a test grade.
