9/10/18 - 9/21/18

September 10th, 2018 - September 21st, 2018

Good morning, parents! We hope you had a wonderful weekend. Here are some updates on upcoming assignments in English Language Arts.

Ms. Culberson and Ms. Johnson (1st, 2nd, and 5th periods):
On Monday, we focused on the plot diagram. We felt like this needed to be reiterated based on their overall performance on the recent selection tests. Beginning today, the students are reading one of two stories. Some students are reading "The Market Square Dog" and some are reading "The Drive-In Movies". We will be working with these short stories for the next two weeks. We will be writing constructed responses, filling out the plot diagram, making "news reports" based on the plot of the stories, practicing citing textual evidence, and playing Quizizz. All of these different strategies will help the students get a greater understanding of the text.

We plan on having a "citing textual evidence" common assessment on Friday. The selection test for these stories will be at the end of next week (date TBD).

Reminder: Thursday, September 13th is "Bring Your Parents to School Day" from 9 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. If you can attend, we would love to see you, and show you some of our classroom procedures, routines, and activities!

February 4th, 2019 - February 14th, 2019 Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on  assignments in English Language Arts! We apologize for the delay in information. January was a great month full of learning about figurative language and narrative writing. The students are finally back into the swing of things and doing really well at the start of second semester! Updates apply for all class periods:  This week, the students are continuing to work with figurative language. We have discussed similes, hyperboles, alliteration, metaphors, personification, oxymorons, and onomatopoeia (acronym: SHAMPOO!) It is important for the students to be able to identify figurative language as it is used in literature, as well as in real life (songs, advertisements, etc.). We are also having the students revise their own written work to include more descriptive language, sensory language, dialogue, and figurative language.  Friday, February 8th , the students have a selection s

December 10th, 2018 - December 20th, 2018 Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on the final assignments in English Language Arts for first semester. Updates apply for all class periods:  This week, the students will be taking the county-mandated Write Score Assessment. This could potentially last until Thursday, 12/13.  On  Friday, December 14th, we will have the Unit Two Benchmark test. Last week, we held review stations with the students, and gave them a study guide as well. Once Write Score is over, we will play review games, such as a team buzzer game and Quizizz. Students can also access the Quizizz at home, so please encourage your students to play the review game multiple times at home!  The code is listed below:  Unit 2 Benchmark Quizizz Code-  914049 Next week, the students will be finalizing their expository essays, and turn them in for a test grade. We gave the students multiple days in class last week to work on their rough drafts, so i
