Good afternoon, all!
We hope everyone had a wonderful winter break with their friends and family. Although we did not send out a blog post last week, we hit the ground running with your students. Last week, we did our class and school spelling bee, learned new vocabulary words, and read/annotated a poem titled, "A Canoe's Night Music". We will continue our poetry unit throughout the next 3-4 weeks tentatively.
Dr. Foote' and Ms. Culberson (1st, 5th, 6th Periods):
This week, we are continuing to focus on "A Canoe's Night Music". Today, the students took a vocabulary quiz on words from the poem. They did really well on this quiz and we are very proud of them. It has been a great start to the semester!
As the week continues, we will read another poem titled, "A Journey of Ten Thousand Miles". We will continue to go through the same process with this poem as the last, by introducing vocabulary from the poem first (students will be given a worksheet to make note-taking easier for them), reading the poem and applying the vocabulary, annotating the poem, and then taking a quiz. This will run into next week as well.
We will complete this process with three separate poems, then the students will have a test on these three poems and their content in a few weeks (date unconfirmed). It is important that your student is engaged in class, in order to prepare them for the poetry unit test.
As warm ups, the students are also working on completing a constructed response that challenges their levels of thinking. They are reading a short article titled, "A Day in the Life of South Africa". We have held discussions and asked questions about this article to help the students compare and contrast it to their lives. They will continue to focus on this article and build a constructed response based on their thoughts and perspectives.
Ms. Culberson (3rd & 4th Periods):
This week, we are continuing to focus on "A Canoe's Night Music". Today, the students took a vocabulary quiz on words from the poem. The students also wrote a constructed response about the poem, causing them to consider why the author wrote the poem and how they could relate the poem to their own life. The students broke into groups and organized these responses using the RACE strategy (Restate, Answer, Cite Evidence, and Explain). They have done really well so far and I am very proud of them.

School News: Elkins Pointe Middle School is holding FastBridge testing this week (Tuesday and Wednesday) with your students. This is a diagnostic test to see how your students have improved since the beginning of the year.
Please let Dr. Foote' or me know if you have any questions or concerns. We are looking forward to a wonderful semester before we send your students off to the 7th grade!
Sincerely,
Cassidy Culberson and Dr. Darold Foote'
