Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! As we move into the last few weeks of school, I wanted to keep you updated on what to expect.

Dr. Foote and Ms. Culberson's Co-Taught Classes (1st, 5th, & 6th Periods):

This week we are continuing to write, edit, and publish our argumentative essays.

Week of 11/27/17:

  • Monday: We practiced how to use proper capitalization and punctuation in our writing through Quizizz competitions. If students have not finished their rough drafts of their essays, they are to do so tonight in order to prepare for tomorrow's class (they have had 4 days to write already).
  • Tuesday: The students will be self-editing and peer-editing their argumentative rough drafts using a checklist.
  • Wednesday: Students will be given the rubric that they will be graded with. They will have time to edit their papers, as necessary, in order to meet the expected criteria.
  • Thursday: Students will type and print their final drafts of their essays. If they do not finish in class, they are to finish this for homework. They can print their essay at school.
  • Friday: Students are to finish any incomplete work and turn in all assignments contributing to the final draft of their argumentative essays (typed copy, handwritten copy, rough draft, graphic organizer, Venn diagram, and peer/self editing checklist).
** Please be aware that we have provided many opportunities to have your student succeed on his or her argumentative essay, as it will hold the weight of a test grade.

Ms. Culberson's Small Group Classes (3rd and 4th Periods):

This week we are continuing to write, edit, and publish our argumentative essays. We will also have our book talk presentations and party.

Week of 11/27/17:
  • Monday and Tuesday: Students will continue writing the rough draft of their argumentative essays.
  • Wednesday: The students will be self-editing and peer-editing their argumentative rough drafts using a checklist. Students will also have essay conferences with me.
  • Thursday: Students will type and print their final drafts of their essays. If they do not finish in class, they are to finish this for homework. They can print the paper at school.
  • Friday: Students are having a book talk party in which they will each present about the book of their choice. They have known about this assignment for 3 weeks. The students are able to bring any snacks/sodas for the party if they choose to.
** Please be aware that I have provided many opportunities to have your student succeed on his or her argumentative essay, as it will hold the weight of a test grade. The book talk presentation will hold the weight of a quiz grade. This should be a fun and easy quiz grade.

All Classes:

Week of 12/4/17:

Students will begin learning how to write a narrative piece. We will also incorporate mini-lessons on adding details and descriptions in writing, adding dialogue, and simple/compound sentences.

Throughout the course of the week, the students will use a variety of strategies (Quizizz, warm ups, writing activities, groups/stations, etc.) to help them incorporate these ideas in the narrative writing of their choice. By the end of the week next week, students will be expected to turn in their creative narrative writing for a grade.

Thank you, and if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at culbersoncj@fultonschools.org.

Have a blessed week!

December 10th, 2018 - December 20th, 2018 Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on the final assignments in English Language Arts for first semester. Updates apply for all class periods:  This week, the students will be taking the county-mandated Write Score Assessment. This could potentially last until Thursday, 12/13.  On  Friday, December 14th, we will have the Unit Two Benchmark test. Last week, we held review stations with the students, and gave them a study guide as well. Once Write Score is over, we will play review games, such as a team buzzer game and Quizizz. Students can also access the Quizizz at home, so please encourage your students to play the review game multiple times at home!  The code is listed below:  Unit 2 Benchmark Quizizz Code-  914049 Next week, the students will be finalizing their expository essays, and turn them in for a test grade. We gave the students multiple days in class last week to work on their rough drafts, so i

February 4th, 2019 - February 14th, 2019 Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on  assignments in English Language Arts! We apologize for the delay in information. January was a great month full of learning about figurative language and narrative writing. The students are finally back into the swing of things and doing really well at the start of second semester! Updates apply for all class periods:  This week, the students are continuing to work with figurative language. We have discussed similes, hyperboles, alliteration, metaphors, personification, oxymorons, and onomatopoeia (acronym: SHAMPOO!) It is important for the students to be able to identify figurative language as it is used in literature, as well as in real life (songs, advertisements, etc.). We are also having the students revise their own written work to include more descriptive language, sensory language, dialogue, and figurative language.  Friday, February 8th , the students have a selection s

November 26th, 2018 - December 7th, 2018 Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on upcoming assignments in English Language Arts. We apologize that we have not emailed you in a few weeks, but we hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Break. We only have about three and a half weeks left of fall semester, so we will be kicking it into gear as we come to a close.  Updates apply for all class periods:  The students have been working with the stories "The Old Woman Who Lived with Wolves" or "Zlateh the Goat" for a few weeks. The students have written constructed responses, practiced using the plot diagram, completed vocabulary graphic organizers, written summaries, completed Venn Diagrams, and more. Therefore, they are very acclimated with these stories. We will have a quiz over these stories tomorrow, November 27th. The students will practice today using Quizizz, which will greatly prepare them.  We would recommend that the students also play th
