February 4th, 2019 - February 14th, 2019
Good morning, parents! Here are some updates on assignments in English Language Arts! We apologize for the delay in information. January was a great month full of learning about figurative language and narrative writing. The students are finally back into the swing of things and doing really well at the start of second semester!
Updates apply for all class periods:
This week, the students are continuing to work with figurative language. We have discussed similes, hyperboles, alliteration, metaphors, personification, oxymorons, and onomatopoeia (acronym: SHAMPOO!) It is important for the students to be able to identify figurative language as it is used in literature, as well as in real life (songs, advertisements, etc.). We are also having the students revise their own written work to include more descriptive language, sensory language, dialogue, and figurative language.
Friday, February 8th, the students have a selection story assessment (quiz grade) over the stories "Hard as Nails" or "Water". We will review in class Thursday and provide access to a Quizizz so that the students can study. We will also have a short, eight-word vocabulary quiz. It will solely ask the students to identify the definition for the given vocabulary word. The students have had these words for two weeks now.
Next week, the students will work on comparing and contrasting paired texts. We will also spend two days working on writing narrative responses in preparation for the Georgia Milestones Assessment.
Please remember that there is no school for students Friday, February 15th, Monday, February 18th, and Tuesday, February 19th! Therefore, please encourage your students to have all of their work turned in before the short break! :)
Let us know if you have any questions! Have a wonderful week!
Thank you,
Cassidy Culberson and Chelsey Johnson
